The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti to the west. It is known for its beaches, resorts and golf courses. Its territory consists of rainforest, savannah and mountains including Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean. Santo Domingo, the capital, is home to Spanish-built monuments such as the Gothic Catedral Primada de America (or Cathedral of Our Lady of the Incarnation) in the 16th-century Zona Colonial district.
